John Kliewer introduced new coaches Michael Riley and Blake Deal to the 2018-19 team.

Cameron football team welcomes two new coaches

During a football meeting held April 17, Head Football Coach John Kliewer introduced two new coaches to the team. Michael Riley will be the new Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach. Blake Deal is the new Wide Receiver and Defensive Acts Coach.

Kliewer said he is excited about their experience, what they have done and accomplished in their football careers.

“I think they will help add that (experience), help our team grow, help our players get better and definitely help us improve as a group overall.”

Riley, who is a 1989 Cameron grad, told the team “the gym smells the same, waking through the halls, everything is the same.” He is currently teaching history at Blue Valley West High School, but will be handling dual credit and credit recovery when he starts teaching in Cameron this fall.

“I am a history teacher,” said Riley, who started coaching football in 2001. “But, they don’t have a history position open at this time and I am content to do what I have to do to be on this team.”

Riley said when he started coaching in 2001 he never wanted to be anywhere other than Cameron, his goal was to eventually come back home and he has. Riley’s main message for the team is “perseverance is big.”

“I am most looking forward to showing the team what Cameron football is,” said Riley. “Coach Kliewer has a great operation and I am here to help get a winning tradition back at the school like it used to be.”

Blake Deal is a Savannah High School graduate and moved onto play football for Northwest Missouri State where he played for a National Championship team.

Deal is certified in physical education but will be joining the Cameron High School staff as what he calls a “utility guy”, floating between positions such as ISS and overseeing the new online foreign language courses as needed.

“I just want to help us fly around and move fast to make the whole unit come together,” said Deal on his goal for next year’s team. “I want them to learn to enjoy the process. If you come to practice with a frown you aren’t going to improve. If you want to be here, are excited and bring a friend, numbers will improve so hopefully that leads to more wins.”

The past few years, the football team has dealt with number and size issues. However, Kliewer said 20 upcoming freshmen have signed up for football for the 2018-19 season and a few new sophomore players expressed interest in joining the team. Although the upperclassmen are small in rank, the team total looks to be about 60 players.

“I am ready to show what we have been working on the last couple of years,” said Kliewer about the upcoming season. “We are hungry to be out there and get a ‘W’ and prove that everything we’ve been doing is worth it.”

Cameron will host their first game of the season on August 24 against Northeast High School.
