Dragons demolish Central 58-20 in district opener

The Cameron Dragons quickly dispatched the Central Screaming Eagles, opting to their reserves after establishing a double-digit lead early in last Friday’s 58-20 victory.

The Dragons racked up more than 500 yards total offense while holding Central to under 200 yards with the reserves taking the reins early in the third quarter of the blowout victory and will face the Maryville Spoofhounds in round two of the district tournament next Friday.

“Coach Wallace told me at the beginning of the week that we were going to pass a lot. I took his word and I said, ‘Alright, let’s do it,’” said senior quarterback Ty Campbell, who 14 of 19 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns. “As a team, we had a really good week of practice and that helped us out a lot. This keeps us hungry. Since we were out due to COVID against Maryville, we want [a win] so bad … Maryville has gotten better since they last faced us. They’ve kind of been on a roll. We just need to do our job, stay hungry and see what happens.”

After capping off their first two drives with short-yardage TDs from junior running back Dom Hurst and junior receiver Ty Speer, the Dragons proved they were equally deadly through the air with Campbell finding senior receiver Kacy Kellerstrass from 32 yards out, then hitting Speer from 22 yards out to give Cameron a 27-0 lead. Hurst, who average more than 10 yards per carry with 131 yards, added the second of three TDs to extend the lead, then Campbell hit Speer with 3 seconds left in the first half to give the Dragons a 36-point cushion going into halftime.

“We knew we had to get the job done and send a message. We did that tonight,” Cameron senior receiver Kacy Kellerstrass said. “Everybody got a piece tonight. This was an all-around good game for us. We know we can get better and fix a few things … Maryville, we’re coming for you.”
