Gardening- the Love of Flowers
Our fifth in a series of gardens in the Cameron area features the home of Kim and Dale Schreck, on South Chestnut Street in Cameron. People come from as far as Kansas City to see their brilliant show of flowers and whimsical statuary, all displayed with an artistic sense as well as precision. Each display is manicured to perfection, yet is still boundlessly joyful.
Kim says, “When we bought the house about twenty years ago, we started landscaping, and it grew from there.” Julie Mallen of Just Blooming greenhouse supplies their flowers. Dale has always been a big part of the garden, but especially this year, when Kim underwent double knee replacement surgery. They met this challenge because it would have been such a disappointment not to have their flowers. Another challenge was met last year during the drought, when they bought water so they could have the flowers. Kim and Dale really love their flowers.
Their garden was the first-ever Yard of the Month when that award was given in previous years, and they received a plaque and a windmill. Kim’s late mother made clothes for her concrete ducks, and they are dressed for each season. They also have a plaque commemorating her late brother.
Their goals for the future are to add more and different things each year. Their advice for other gardeners is “Water, water, water, and lots of weeding! Be patient and persistent, it’s an adventure”.
