Letter to the editor

During Monday night’s (Nov. 5) council meeting, when economic development was being discussed, each council person was asked what they thought.

Mrs. Curtis passed when first approached and later complained that the other three city people attending the Economic Development of Cameron organization (EDOC) were not keeping her informed.

Mike O’Donnell explained that EDOC was a group of business leaders who were formed to give local input to then Economic Developer Shellby Hendee. Upon his retirement, the City decided to not be involved with the development efforts.

Later EDOC joined with the Chamber of Commerce in an attempt to keep Cameron on a progressive path. EDOC has always included the mayor and city manager. The Chamber and EDOC sought a professional to lead their effort and hired Terry Rumery several years ago. Because they could not afford a full-time person, the Chamber and EDOC asked the city for partial funding. That funding has been granted for several years but was being discussed at the meeting.

EDOC President Mike Russell was joined by Mike O’Donnell, Mark Garges, Jack Briggs, Deb Hahn, Julie Ausmus, Jo Abrutz, Lisa McCartney, Gary Summers and Pam Ice in stressing the importance of a strong economic development program.

When council members were individually asked what they thought about continuing the effort, Mayor Breckenridge and Councilman Feighert avoided the question and attacked the group supporting the effort saying they could not be trusted because one of their aims was to unseat the two of them.

Mrs.Mayor and Mr. Feighert – what does the subject at hand, Economic Development, have to do with “secret” meetings?  NOTHING.

Professionalism is being able to sort out facts – not hold grudges, and making decisions to prevent PROGRESS of our community, which it appears you both are doing.  Using your positions as council members, because your feelings are hurt, to prevent (yes, I say PREVENT) progress in Cameron, is wrong.  You are being CHILDISH and reacting in a bullish manner.  Think about this – what would you think of your child doing what you are doing – it is WRONG!

In closing remember this, “CHANGE DONE TO US IS DISTURBING, BUT CHANGE DONE BY US IS EXHILIATING”.

Sincerely,

Alene Briggs
