Cameron Citizen Observer names veteran reporter Jimmy Potts as its new managing editor
Potts’ tenure began last Wednesday and he brings with him more than 15 years of experience in news and sports reporting.
Potts grew up in Johnson County, Kansas, but his career in Bossier City, La., after resurrecting the Bossier Parish Community College newspaper, The Kaleidoscope, in 2008 following a two-year hiatus. A successful internship earned Potts his first full-time job at the Bossier Press-Tribune as its lead reporter, covering courts and crime as well as state, local and federal government. Potts took his first sports editor with the Natchitoches Times, covering three high schools as well as Louisiana State University, Northwestern State University and other high school and semi-professional sports teams based around Shreveport, La.
In the intervening years since his time in Natchitoches, Potts primarily worked as an editor covering news and sports at dailies in Kansas, Indiana and recently the Texas-based Brownwood Bulletin, where he worked covering a variety of subjects including high school and college athletics and local government.
At the Citizen-Observer, Potts will continue covering high school sports and local government and hopes to pick up where previous editor Tara Wallace left off.
“I look forward to getting to know the community. For me, this is an opportunity to come home and covering the news in a setting I’ve been familiar with since I was a child,” Potts said. “After just a few days, the drive through Tuesday’s torrential rain and tornado watches seems more than worth it. The staff at the Citizen-Observer has an enthusiasm for local news rarely seen in the newspaper industry. My intent is to add my experience to a foundation established by Tara and continue presenting news to the Cameron community in a way it deserves.”
