Cameron First all girls wrestling team
Something new in Missouri High School Sports: Girls Wrestling. Missouri becomes the 9th state in the union to offer official girls high school wrestling, sanctioned by the Missouri High School Athletic Association.
A number of individuals and organizations have been advocating to officially add high school wrestling in state athletic associations. Organizations such as the National Wrestling Coaches Association, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and Wrestle Like a Girl, Inc. Joan Fulp (CA) and Andrea Yamamoto (OR) of the USA Wrestling Girls High School Development Committee have worked hard to recognize Wrestling as a high school sport for girls.
Girls Wrestling is now officially sanctioned in Hawaii, Texas, California, Washington, Tennessee, Alaska, Georgia, Oregon, and now Missouri.
In the past, girls interested in wrestling had to wrestle in the same league as boys. Right or wrong, this often-created controversies. Very often a boy wrestler would simply forfeit a match when his opponent was a girl. This new official recognition of girls wrestling will eliminate this problem and allow the girls to wrestle more often and add more competitors in their weight classification.
Cameron Wrestling Coach Phillip Limb says, “Cameron has one of the bigger teams in the area, and the biggest in the Midland Empire Conference”. Cameron has a team of 14 girls including two seniors, 1 junior, 3 sophomores, and 8 freshmen. Limb has been impressed with “their great work ethic, and how eager they are to learn and grow in the sport.
Cameron is awaiting a decision from the State on weight classifications. Once that is received, they will begin scheduling matches.
