Celebrating 100 Years

Celebrating 100 Years

Mike Hanrahan

Born December 18, 1918, Village resident Ellen Thompson celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday, surrounded by friends and family. Ellen remains very active and is healthy in mind, body, and spirit. She enjoyed visiting with guests and seeing old friends.

Ellen was born in rural Nettleton to Shelby and Ruth (Henderson) Wright.  She moved to Cameron in 1942, during the war, and worked at Motor Radio Lab developing radio parts for the military. Afterwards she went to work for Dr. Richard Schmitz in Cameron and stayed in his employ for 25 years. Afterwards she went to Beauty College in Kansas City before opening her own shop in Cameron, named Kut ‘n Kurl, which she operated for 20 years.

Ellen’s best memories are of family and in the pride of being self-sufficient. Her advice to young people is to work hard, be kind to people, and help those who need it.

The celebration was hosted by Brenda Cowart and Kathleen Murphy, with assistance from great-niece Christina Cowart. Guest were entertained by Ellen’s great nephew Justin Cowart, who played the cello. It was a pleasant and joyful celebration enjoyed by all.
