Parents as Teachers first monthly outing with Read and Roll

The Cameron Parents as Teachers organization held the first of a series of monthly outings with the Roll and Read.

Cameron Parents as Teachers partnered with the Cameron Public Library Thursday, teaching lessons on counting at multiple activity stations strewn throughout McCorkle Park.

“Every year we do it just a little different so it’s always new and novel for the families that come,” Parents as Teachers Coordinator Mary Bradford said. “The first few years we decorated strollers as part of the event and we had people judge them, thus the Roll and Read. We’ve gotten away from that.”

Parents as Teachers focuses on bringing developmental education for parents before their children begin attending school. As part of their mission, they reach out to area parents through monthly activities. The group also performs annual screenings to develop skills and act as a resource for accessing helpful information.

“This provides a recruitment opportunity for us,” Bradford said. “The whole community is invited We don’t make it a prerequisite that you be enrolled in our program to participate in our monthly event. It gives us an opportunity to find and meet new families in the community and give them a chance to come together with like individuals, who have children roughly about the same age.”

Next month, Parents as Teachers will host a transportation-based program ‘Things that Go’ inside the Parkview Elementary School parking lot. For more information on the event, or any Cameron Parents as Teachers activities, check them out the Facebook or call (816) 882-1034.
