Recognizing Victims’ Rights
Since 1981, National Crime Victims’ Rights is celebrated annually in April, this year it was celebrated April 7-13. The theme of the week was “Honoring our Past. Creating Hope for Future”. The week is dedicated to educating others about victimization and the effect it has on families, friends, and the community. The thought is to build awareness, help promote laws, policies, and programs to help crime victims.
In the past Victim Support Services nationwide have participated in marches, tree planting ceremonies, and many other activities that will help promote victims’ rights and also honor criminals’ victims and their advocates. On Friday, April 12, Western Missouri Correctional Center participated by holding a balloon release at Kelsey Park.
Several people from the community were present as well as law enforcement, prison personnel and City staff.
