Dragons blank Lions 55-0

The Cameron Dragons will host a postseason game for the first time since 2013 after blanking St. Joseph Christian 55-0 in a near flawless victory.

The Dragons dominated in every facet of the game Friday night, exploding for a 35-0 lead in the first quarter on three touchdowns by junior quarterback Ty Campbell, a blocked punt for a touchdown by junior defensive back Patrick Greer and pair of rushing touchdowns by sophomore running back Dom Hurst and senior lineman Zach Jones, who Coach Jeff Wallace said was well deserved considering Jones suffered through years of futility with previous teams.

“It’s awesome. The whole change in the program, the culture. It’s awesome. I’m proud to be a Dragon,” Jones said. “We haven’t hosted a (postseason) game since 2013 so I’m pretty sure (against Central Christian Academy) it’s going to be loud and the stands will be packed – a great atmosphere for a playoff game.”

Campbell, who completed 5 of 6 passes for 135 yards and three TDs got hot early after finding senior receiver Nick Helmich for a touchdown from 48 yards out early in the opening drive. Greer’s TD return on a blocked punt the next series, and then an interception by freshman linebacker Kayden Brown, set up Hurst’s 12-yard TD run to extend Cameron’s lead to 21-0 in less than 10 minutes of action. After a Jones fumble recovery, Campbell found pay-dirt on another connection with Helmich – this time from 38 yards.

“I’m just going to credit the line, the QB and the play call,” said Helmich, who racked up 86 yards on his pair of receptions. “It was just perfect execution. They delivered and I just caught the ball and walked in the end zone. I did the least of it. It was an awesome night. We’re going to enjoy this this weekend, but Monday we’re going to be focused on the next game.”
