Dragons top Benton 39-28 for first MEC victory

The Cameron Dragons earned their first Midland Empire Conference victory after quarterback Ty Campbell sealed the win with a 61-yard touchdown with 1:38 left in regulation put Cameron ahead 39-28.

Lineman Camren Hedgpeth, who racked up a team-leading  all but guaranteed victory following the Dragon’s 35-21 loss to Lafayette last Friday - strange for a team on a five-game losing streak - but his words seemed prophetic after he and linebacker/running back Dom Hurst forced a Benton fumble on the goal line, setting up Campbell’s fourth-quarter run.

“It’s all the coach’s plan. We just follow it. Here in about two weeks we’re going to host a district game. That’s the plan,” Hedgpeth said. “… [Senior night against Northland Christian] the stands are going to be filled. It’s is going to be high intensity. It’s going to be wild.”

Campbell and Hedgpeth both put on a show with Hedgpeth continuing his tear through the MEC with 13.5 tackles (11 solo) while Campbell led the Dragons to 439 yards of offense with 180 yards rushing with two TDs, 77 passing and 25 yards receiving on a triple-reverse pass from receiver Tye Speer in the second quarter.

“We worked on it a couple of times. I told Ty to throw it outside and he threw it inside,” said Campbell, who later credited his offensive line for setting up his 61-yard TD in the fourth quarter. “I just followed my blocks. Coach called the right play and we know it was going to happen sooner or later. It was either Dom or me. We were both running the ball really well.”
