75 years later Pearl harbor remembered

The headline on December 8, 1941 in the Cameron News-Observer was:

US DECLARES WAR AGAINST JAPAN

We run this story again to remember those who served, those killed in the attacks on Pearl Harbor, and for those who survived and continued to serve.

Both Senate and House Back President and Pass Resolutions in Less Than Hour After Joint Session

In his address to a join session of Congress at 11:30 today (our time) the President of the United States asked for legislators to declare war against the aggressor, Japan. The address was brief and pointed, requiring only ten minutes to deliver and about 500 words.

The joint session of Congress was held in the House chamber where all seats were filled in the chamber and galleries. A committee of three Representatives and three Senators were appointed to escort the President to the chamber. On his arrival there was prolonged applause as he marched down the center aisle escorted by his son, James in naval uniform, and members of his cabinet.

The President briefly outlined the attacks which had been made by Japan without warning and said that Dec. 7, 1941, is a date that will long live in the minds of Americans; that while Japan had continually led us to believe that negotiations were to continue, attacked without warning; that the attack had been deliberately planned for days and weeks, and that the facts speak for themselves. Americans will always remember the character and attack against us, he said.

He stated that the United States will not only defend itself but that steps would be taken so that such treachery would not again be used against us. No matter how long it takes us, he said, the United States will win through to absolute victory. We will gain inevitable triumph, so help us God.
Immediately following the adjournment of the joint session, both the Senate and House members passed resolutions declaring a state of war to exist with Japan. The House affirmative vote was 388 to 1 for war, and the Senate vote was 82 for, with several members absent.

Flags across the nation will be at half staff on Wednesday, December 7 for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
