Area leaders remember fallen servicemen and woman at Cameron Memorial Day Ceremony

The Cameron Community Band, area leaders and dozens of area residents came together at the Cameron Veterans Memorial to honor local military men and women, who sacrificed their lives in service for their country.

Cameron Mayor Becky Curtis served as the guest of honor, spending her allotted time at the speaker’s podium lamenting an America without servicemen and women willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country, and a citizenry that forgets those sacrifices.

“This is the day we pay homage to those that didn’t come home. This is the day of solemn contemplation over the cost of freedom. We do not forget. Whether it’s an hour ago or a century ago, we remember,” Curtis said.

Curtis spent the majority of her time recognizing Army Warrant Officer 2 Matthew Kelley, who died in a helicopter crash in 2009 over Kirkuk, Iraqi while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Quoting an article from the Associated Press, Curtis said Kelley “Always wanted to fly.”

“The pain of loss will reverberate for years to come. You can rest assure it will always be painfully felt by Gold Star Families, who will mourn them for the rest of their lives. The mothers raising their children alone or a wife or father never getting to touch or hug their son for decades to come. These Gold Star Families are the unsung heroes left to pick up the pieces,” Curtis said.
