Cameron Park Board remains firm on July 2021 pool opening

The Cameron Park Board announced it will hold to its plan to open the new Cameron Aquatic Center by July of 2021 after finalizing a deal for construction of the $4.7 million project.

Following the board’s hiring of Carrothers Construction, LCC, who estimated they could have the future Cameron Aquatic Center up and running in nine months, members of the Cameron Park Board felt confident they could have the pool open by next summer.

“They’ve done it in a shorter period of time, but, again, it’s one of those all of the stars have to align,” Park Board Member Jennifer Helmich said. “It’s everything as far as the weather, COVID - everything … Who knows what December holds for us. I now know more about pool construction management than I ever cared to know.”

Last June, voters approved a 1/2-cent sales tax funding the new aquatic center and city park with Cameron Public Works Director Bontrager estimating it would generate $640,000 per year, totaling $16 million by the time it sunsets in 2045. The $4.7 million set aside for the Cameron Aquatic Center would be a complete overhaul of the current Cameron Municipal Pool and include additional waterslides, splash pad, an additional seven-lane swimming pool and bring the facility to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

In August, the board approved Lamp Rynearson Aquatics Group Leader Andy Smith, who recommended Carrothers Construction, LLC among two other candidates interviewed earlier this month.

“Carrothers seemed to be that happy medium of they would sub-consult a lot out, but they are also a working crew so they could keep the project flowing faster. Their anticipated deadline they gave us was the [shortest],” Bontrager said.
