Cameron School District prepares for new year

Students in the Cameron School District will enter the 2016-2017 school noticing some changes and upgrades in each of the four buildings.

Parkview Elementary Principal, Donna Rush, explained that a rotation system has been set up for new classroom furniture. One classroom from each grade level has new desks, chairs, and a kidney shaped table.

A second change is the addition of a cooking room. “During summer school, we created a cooking room. This allows teachers to do some cooking activities with their classes,” remarked Rush.

“Students will be thrilled when they see the new giant reading chair,” smiled Rush.  The Adirondack- like chair was constructed by Jason Jarrett, and the lumber was donated by Sutherlands. According to Jarrett, it took several weeks to construct and measures nearly 5' 8 inches tall, 6' wide, and approximately 6' long.

Plans are in the works for a few playground improvements. Finally, three new tables will be added to the cafeteria, which allows more room for students during lunch, and gives parents additional space when visiting their children.

Cameron Intermediate School has added new furniture to all of the third grade classrooms. “The unique furniture pieces allow for a more collaborative culture within the classroom,” said principal Laurie Mefford.  In addition, several iPads were purchased for Project Lead the Way, and a designated science lab has been established for all grades to utilize. Finally, third, fourth, and fifth grade students have all of their classes in their own wing this year.

It doesn't take long to notice changes as they pertain to the Cameron High School. The lower south parking lot was resurfaced, painted, and handicap modified. In the process, over twenty additional parking spaces were added. The upper east parking lot, which holds faculty, visitors, and handicap parking spaces, was repaired and increased by twelve spaces.

The high school activities entrance will now display four modern trophy cases dedicated to the accomplishments of the band, choir, DECA, and other activities. An additional case will be dedicated to veterans in recognition of their service and generosity. A fifty-five inch interactive touch screen television will be mounted in the center of the entrance. “Our plan is to digitize all of the older athletic photos and records. So, you can pick a specific sport or activity for a particular year and view them,”  stated principal, Mark Wiegers. The 2016 senior class donated floor tile. which will form a dragon's head at the entrance. As previous reported, the gym floor, which was approximately fifteen years old,  was completely sanded down, replaced, repainted, and relined.

The newest building in the district, Cameron Veterans Middle School (CVMS), continues to add finishing touches. “Vision Audio did an amazing job of posting our mission and vision statements to our walls,” stated principal, Tiffani Collins. Much needed window treatments will be in all classrooms.  Two display cases have been mounted and, according to assistant principal, Hadley Fisher, will be used for art, awards, and trophies. Finally, administration is in the process of adding a veteran's display, which will showcase veteran memorabilia.
