The Cameron Dragon High School Marching Band was the largest band competing at the MWSU competition.

CHS Marching Band and Drumline receive top honors at contest

The Cameron Dragon Marching Band successfully defended their title as Grand Champions at the Missouri Western State University Homecoming Parade Marching Competition on Saturday, October 15.

The CHS band, which encompasses 85 musicians, 12 color guard and 12 pom members, were judged in the categories of music, marching, and auxiliary/guard. The music score was based on the overall effect of the sound of the band, balance, tone, precision in playing, and articulation. The marching score revealed success of the band's overall ability to march, hold formation with front, diagonal and back lines, execution, and staying in step. The auxiliary section, which included the pom squad and the color guard, were rated in terms of synchronization, coordination, execution, and how they add to the overall presentation.

“The student's hard work and attention to detail led them to their ability to do things at a very high level. We're happy with their work and are looking forward to positive results in the Maryville competition,” said Blake Duren, CHS Band Director.

The musical success continued Saturday evening as the CHS competitive drumline traveled to Trenton to compete in the 20th  Annual Trenton Marching Band Festival. The festival is a comprehensive event that brings together exceptional high school talent to compete in the areas of field and parade competition, indoor drumline, and auxiliary/color guard.

The 18 member CHS drumline took the court in Trenton and performed two pieces, “Inferno” and “Neon Sunrise”. Their creativity, showmanship, and precise execution earned them first place among Class 3A schools including Macon, Maryville, Chillicothe, Hallsville, and Lawson.

In preparation for the event, percussion specialist, Jack Malo, traveled to Cameron on several occassions to work with the drumline. Malo is a music education major and marching band member from Missouri Western State University. Describing the role Malo played, Duren said, “If the brass is the offense and woodwinds are the defense, then percussion is the special teams kind of thing. He was definitely part of the success.”

The marching band's next competition takes place Saturday, October 29 in Maryville.
