Crime Victim's Right event in McCorkle Park

National Crime Victim’s Rights Week is held very year in April, organized by the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC). This year, it was held April 10-16 with the theme of “Serving Victims. Building Trust. Restoring Hope.”

In honor of National Crime Victims Rights Week, Crossroads Correctional Center and Western Missouri Correctional Center hosted an event at 1:30 p.m. on April 15 at McCorkle Park.  State Representative Jay Eggleston was the guest speaker.

A moving story was told by the Wilson family, it featured a dance and live information by family members.  The ceremony in the park was a moving demonstration in the form of reading and interpretative dance by Deidra, Debra, Dominic, Deana, Darcy and Darrell Wilson.  Each family member had a part in telling the story of the family shattered by an abusive husband.  “The Good Guy” story was told.

At the end of the emotional dance, accompanied by the song ‘Say what you wanna say’, it was shown that for the Wilson family, speaking out to others was always better.

Three checks were presented, each one coming from employees of Crossroads.
