Decisions are at an all-time high for Park Board Members

The Park Board Committee held a meeting on Thursday, June 13th starting with public participation. Rebecca McMullen, The Old School of Cameron Manager, asked for permission to continue the free swim event that happens every year around the Fourth of July. She requested the free swim be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., also asking about the maximum capacity that would be allowed at the Cameron Aquatic Center. The motion passed. The meeting also oversaw financial matters and a “to-do list” of things the Park Board would like to accomplish. Matt Ardnt states “We want to know what we are giving up in order to do something else when it comes to spending money.” The top items on the list were a height marker, rule signs, a new playground, the two practice ball fields to be game-ready, and additional parking at the new ball fields since parking seems to be congested during game nights.

Another concern during the meeting was the pickleball court, which was supposed to be built near the Cameron Community Park at Old Somerville. However, decisions on the location, time consumption and noise disruptions play a factor in making a final decision. Jack Briggs, a huge local supporter and resident of the Cameron community, donated $20,000 to go towards constructing a pickleball court. However, patiently waiting for some time now, Briggs sees no progress in the use of his donation, which has been wanted by several residents over the last few years, in addition to giving Cameron residents another activity to participate in. With no progress, Briggs requests immediate progress or a return of his donation.

The conversation quickly turned to a new playground at the Cameron Aquatic Center. The Park Board looks forward to hearing bids, and a more definite answer to their financial plan by the next meeting.
