Kelsey Kirkpatrick, a TCC Verizon employee, hands a free backpack to Frankie Keller Sunday, July 31, outside the TCC Verizon Store on Walnut Street.

Hundreds of backpacks given away in hours

The TCC Verizon Store handed out 200 backpacks, filled with school supplies, in just a few hours as part of their annual backpack giveaway.

With the bulk of their backpacks handed out in the first 15 minutes of Sunday’s event, Cameron resident Kathy McGee picked up the final backpack just a few hours into the event.

“We needed a backpack for Jonathan. He’s five, and he couldn’t make it out,” said McGee, who proudly declared ‘I guess I won’ while receiving the final bag for her grandson Sunday. “That’s pretty awesome. Otherwise, we would have to run to the store and buy one. My daughter, who is home with Jonathan right now, she said ‘Hey, they’re giving away free backpacks. And it would really help me out.’ So, it’s really helping her a lot.”
