School board remains firm on performing arts center March opening

After more than a year of delays due to the supply shortages, the new Cameron High School Performing Arts Center will open next Spring with significant interior work slated for January.

With the CHS Drama Department’s Fall production “Footloose” wrapping up last week, marking the final performance inside the dilapidated Goodrich Theater, Cameron R-1 School Board Superintendent Matt Robinson announced contractors remain on track for a March opening, which will coincide with the Midland Empire Conference Arts Festival.

“They were finishing up some work as far as getting it all ready for paint. We really should be at the point where we start pouring the concrete for the flooring and all of that, then start building the theater part of it as far as seating and all of that,” Robinson said. “We’re still anticipating the seating coming in and we’re hopeful by the end of January that we can start using the facility. I’m sure there will be a couple of things we’ll have to fix or do, or have a couple of things we’ll have to learn.”

Funding for the CHS Performing Arts Center comes from the $10 million B.E.S.T. Bond approved by voters in June of 2020.
