Suicidal subject taken into custody without incident

U.S. Highway 36 in Caldwell County has reopened after a traffic stop involving a suicidal subject.

According to a news release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, on Jan. 25, approximately 4:15 a.m., the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department requested assistance from the Missouri State Highway Patrol with a suicidal subject.  The Caldwell County Sheriff's Department stopped a 2004 Chevrolet pickup for a speed violation on U.S. Highway 36 eastbound, approximately two miles east of Hamilton.  After the vehicle was stopped, the driver brandished a weapon and threatened suicide. U.S. 36 was closed in both directions and negotiations were ongoing with the suspect.

At approximately 10:16 a.m. negotiations were successful resulting in the suspect agreeing to exit the vehicle. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect, a 39-year-old white male from Hannibal, Mo., was transported to the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department.  U.S. 36 is now open for normal use.
