Summer Reading Program Celebrates Olympic style

The Cameron Public Library’s Summer Reading program – GET IN THE GAME – READ - officially came to a close July 21st at the Cameron YMCA.  Over 100 kids attended the Olympic Carnival filled with challenging events and a bounce house.  Each child marched with their chosen “country”, competing in javelin throwing, shot put, relays, long jump, mini boat races, and a ping pong bounce.  At the end of the competitions, the kids celebrated their achievements both on and off the event circuit.  The library also announced the many accomplishments of the kids’ reading over the summer.

Almost 70,000 reading minutes were logged by the 150 kids who registered for the eight week program.  An average of 60 kids attended each weekly program held Thursday’s beginning on June 2nd.  Special guests for our events included Cameron Middle School science teacher, Jean Eckert, who explained the “Science of Games”, a performance of “Music of the Games” was presented by musician, Rick Rayburn and “The tortoise and the hare” was told through the magic of Parasol Puppets.  The events schedule was also filled with fun activities, including exploring enchanted games, arcade games, outdoor games and fuel for your body and mind.  Some evening and Saturday events at the library helped extend the excitement to our littlest readers and families too.  This year we held “Choose your own Adventure” story time for kids 0 – 5 on Thursday evenings, a Family Game night and a Super Smash Brothers Tournament, complete with a breakfast bar.

We would like to extend a special thanks to all of our prize donors for this year’s program – Cameron Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Sonic, Wendy’s and East Hills Mall all provided coupons for special treats to motivate the kids to keep reading through the summer.  KMRM Radio station provided our top winners with Schlitterbahn and zoo tickets and a 19” tv was donated as a prize also.

The Library’s summer programming concludes this Thursday evening with Choose your Own Adventure story time for kids 0 – 5 at 7 pm and our FREE SUMMER NIGHT AT THE MOVIES following the Cameron Municipal Band Concert.  In true Olympic spirit, we will be showing the feature “Cool Runnings”.  Free popcorn will be served and drinks will be available for purchase.
