Wolfe resigns from MU Presidency

University of Missouri System president Tim Wolfe resigned Monday amid criticism of his handling of racial issues, thus ending student protests and the Tigers football team strike at the campus in Columbia.

His resignation is effective immediately. The announcement came at a special meeting of the university system's Board of Curators.

Gov. Jay Nixon issued the following statement regarding the resignation of Wolfe.

“Tim Wolfe’s resignation was a necessary step toward healing and reconciliation on the University of Missouri campus, and I appreciate his decision to do so,” Gov. Nixon said. “There is more work to do, and now the University of Missouri must move forward – united by a commitment to excellence, and respect and tolerance for all.  The University of Missouri is an outstanding institution that will continue to play a vital role in our efforts to provide a world-class education to every Missouri student.”

Wolfe began his tenure as system president in Feb. 2012.

He graduated from Rock Bridge High School in Columbia and in 1980 earned a bachelor’s degree from the Trulaske College of Business at MU, where his father, Joe Wolfe, served on the Department of Communication faculty for 30 years and where his mother, Judith Wolfe, earned a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees and a law degree before eventually joining the faculty at the Massachusetts School of Law.

Wolfe worked for IBM for 20 years, leaving in 2000 as vice president and general manager of the global distribution sector. After a three-year stint as executive vice president of the technology services company Covansys, Wolfe joined the Massachusetts software company Novell as president of the Americas before being named MU’s president.
