# Dragon Proud

Few things bring a community together like a Friday night high school football game.  This was the case when the Cameron Dragon Football team took Dave Goodwin Field for their season opener last week.

The scene that night was nothing short of amazing, as I witnessed this small rural town come alive.  Even the soul-sucking heat and humidity couldn’t quell the electric atmosphere.

The bleachers were full of members of the community, their families, friends, co-workers, and students.  Children were shouting, men were shaking hands and women sharing hugs, all taking place as they watched great athleticism on the field and cheered their team on.

The division within the community melted away as Cameronites came together to back the Dragons. The environment was festive and powerfully positive, and the desire for a win was palpable.

School spirit was much more than an expression on Friday night.  On the contrary, school spirit was truly alive and well.  The Marching Dragons, second to none, set the tone with “The Cameron Fight Song” and “The Greatest Show”. The Pom and Cheer squads executed routines that pumped up the crowd, while the Cameron Crazies passionately encouraged athletes and on-lookers.

Football coach Red Saunders originally stated, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” It couldn’t have been more true Friday night.

As the game came to a close with the Dragons on top, students were compelled to spill onto the field. There was screaming, laughter, tears, hugs, and more laughter. It was a much-needed shot in the arm.  One senior remarked, “This was the best day of high school for me.”

As I observed people exiting, I noticed a general sense of cohesiveness, respect and local pride. Everyone was standing a bit taller and smiles came easy.

Congratulations to ALL Dragon students and athletes. You won…and you brought the community together for a moment. Perhaps that was the bigger win.
