Baseball goes 0-2 in Chillicothe Tournament
Cameron’s varsity baseball team went 0-2 in last weekend’s tournament in Chillicothe, falling to the Benton Cardinals and the Macon Tigers.
The Dragons played the first game of the tournament on Friday, April 29 versus Benton. Cameron gained control of the game during the first inning with a 1-0 score. The Cardinals answered in the second inning with a run, and after a scoreless third inning, racked up an additional four points during the fourth, turning the score to 1-5 and taking the lead. The Dragons got a man home in the sixth inning, but weren’t able to match the Cardinals’ persistence. Benton was victorious, winning 2-8 after bringing in three last runs in the seventh inning. Cameron ended the game with six hits, a team batting average of .231, and two Runs Batted In, hit by #42, Sophomore Parker McGinnis.
The Dragons were able to put more points on the board, despite falling to the Macon Tigers for the second of two games on Friday.
Subsequent to a scoreless first inning, the Tigers took the lead, scoring three. The Dragons answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Tigers’ lead advanced in the third and fourth innings as they scored five runs and held the Dragons, making the score 8-2. Both teams progressed their leads by two runs in the fifth inning, and, although Cameron held the opposing team in the sixth and seventh innings, the final two runs, scored by the Dragons in the bottom of the seventh, were not enough to secure the win, and the team took their second loss of the weekend with a 6-10 score. Cameron ended the game with nine hits, a team batting average of .290, and two RBIs.
“We really struggled in clutch opportunities at the plate.” Head Coach Nathan Moore said. “Struggled to get any consistency and made a few defensive mistakes. We made it hard on ourselves early, and couldn't recover. On a positive note, we haven't hit our stride yet, but in high school baseball, now is the time to find it. We are hopeful that we will hit it this week and carry some momentum into districts.”
The team traveled to take on Pembroke Hill on Monday, May 2, and faced Bishop LeBlond at home on Tuesday, May 3. They will play the Senior Night game on Friday, May 6 against East Buchanan at Cameron’s Park Valley Baseball Complex at 4:30 PM.
