Boys tennis hosts tournament

The Cameron High School boys tennis team has started the season strong, with a 2-0 record, and a successful tournament, on Wednesday, March 30 at the Cameron Veterans Middle School tennis courts.

The team earned their first two wins against Richmond, succeeding 8-1, and Benton, 5-4. “Thus far the boys have played well in matches and they did a great job grinding out a couple of key matches in the win against Benton.” Said Coach Richard Berry.

Eight teams participated in last week’s tournament. Cameron placed fifth overall. LeBlond came out on top, with 20 points, followed by Kirksville’s 13.5, Chillicothe’s 12, Warrensburg’s 8.5, Cameron’s 7.5, Higginsville’s 6, Savannah’s 3.5, and Trenton’s 2.

Although Cameron team members were unable to place in the individual matches, two pairs of teammates represented Cameron in the day’s doubles results. Senior Gage Zeit and Junior David Curtis took 4th place, behind duos from Chillicothe, Kirksville, and LeBlond, and Seniors Jared Meister and Andrew Pratt came in behind a second Chillicothe pair for sixth place, after getting a difficult first round draw and winning their way through consolation to the fifth place match.

“We’ve been very pleased so far as a team with our play and look forward to continuing that next week with 3 conference matches” said Berry.

The team’s Monday, April 4 game against Bishop LeBlond has been rescheduled to Thursday, April 14. They traveled to take on St. Joseph Lafayette on Tuesday, April 5, and will travel the following Wednesday for a matchup against Savannah.
