Dragons fall hard to Spoofhounds

The Maryville Spoofhounds handed the Cameron Dragons a sobering 92-8 loss last Friday at Dave Goodwin Field.

The Spoofhounds jumped on the Dragons early, finding the end zone on the first play after their opening return, making the score 8-0 after a successful two point conversion and setting the tone for the remainder of the game. The Spoofhounds extended their lead to 37-0 by the end of the first quarter.

The opposing team took advantage of Cameron in early in the second quarter as well, after a bad punt snap into the end zone was recovered by Maryville for a touchdown. The Dragons attempted to answer the slew of allowed touchdowns before the half when a couple of big catches, made by junior Parker Whitacre, put the Dragons on Maryville’s 31 yard line. The drive came to an early end, as a Spoofhound interception was returned for an additional touchdown. The Dragons were left trailing by a margin of 72-0 at the half.

A sign of life was shown by the Cameron offense in the third, with a big carry from junior Dalton Erickson for a Dragons touchdown, making the score 79-8. The Spoofhounds then answered by returning the kickoff for a touchdown. After one final showing by the opposing offense, the Dragons were left with a final score of 92-8.

“Tonight’s performance was on me.” Head Coach John Kliewer explained via social media after the loss. “It is my responsibility to prepare my players to play to their best ability, regardless of the opponent’s ability. Tonight, I did not do that. I believe our opponents played the game with respect and integrity. Congrats to them on the victory. Both teams will watch this game and learn about humility and playing the game with honor. We will continue to improve as much as we can every day and every week. To the true Dragon fans, thank you for your continued support. These players deserve it.”

The Dragons will travel to take on the Savannah Savages on Friday, September 23.
