Dragons go 2-1 in Pony Express Tournament

The Cameron varsity baseball team went 2-1 in last week’s Pony Express Tournament in St. Joseph.

On Tuesday, April 19, the Dragons fell 13-3 against Lafayette’s Fighting Irish. The opposing team took immediate control of the game, scoring five runs in the first inning. Runs continued to trickle in throughout the fourth, fifth, and sixth, innings, and the Dragons, scoring two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth, were not able to keep up, and were handed the loss for the first game of the tournament.

Despite this initial loss, Cameron’s tenacity prevailed on Thursday, April 21, as they ended their 19-year losing streak against the Benton Cardinals. The Dragons racked up 11 points in the first four innings, giving the team the momentum needed to secure the victory, as they held the Cardinals to a mere 7 runs for a final score of 11-7.

The Dragons ended the tournament with a 2-1 record subsequent to their second win on Friday, April 22 against the Harrisonville Wildcats. The Wildcats put three runs on the board in the top of the first inning, and were quickly silenced by Cameron’s six runs in the bottom of the first. After several additional points by both teams, the game ended with a Cameron victory with a score of 10-6.

“After a rough pitching night against Lafayette, our pitchers threw a lot of strikes and gave us a chance to compete against Benton and Harrisonville.” said Head Coach Nathan Moore. “In high school baseball it's about pitching strikes and playing solid defense. When we do that well, we will be in good shape. Our offense has been pretty solid all season, and we look for that group to only get better. We changed our offensive approach at the plate. We got ourselves into some very friendly hitters counts and capitalized. Tyler Gerber hit a grand slam home run against Harrisonville his second homerun of the season. Parker McGinnis also hit his third homerun of the season during the tournament.”

This week, varsity plays in Chillicothe for a three game tournament which begins at 2:30pm on Friday, April 29.
