Irish hand Dragons shutout loss

Trey Washington scored two touchdowns rushing and Riley McKay threw two TD passes to lead Lafayette to a 37-0 win over the Cameron Dragons in MEC football at Lafayette Friday night.

The Irish improve to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the league while the Dragons drop to 1-6 and 0-5 in conference play.

Washington scored on rushing plays of 69 and 22 yards and McKay connected on a 10-yard scoring pass to Ja’Den King and a 14-yard strike to Gavin Brown.

Cameron lost a fumble at their own nine-yard line on the game’s opening possession, but the Dragons defense held as Lafayette was stopped on downs at the CHS one-yard line.

The Irish scored a safety when Cameron QB Caleb Shanks was tackled in the end zone.

After a Lafayette punt, the Dragons turned the ball over again with another fumble at their 15-yard line and McKay found King in the end zone for their first touchdown. Zach Rich added the extra point for a 9-0 lead.

Washington scored on a 69-yard run midway through the second quarter and Dragons DB David Curtis intercepted a McKay pass at the CHS two-yard line on Lafayette’s next possession.

Rich missed on a 40-yard field goal at the end of the half.

Shanks was injured on Cameron’s first possession of the second half and Tristan Michaelis took over at quarterback the rest of the game.

Washington scored his second TD with 2:55 left in the third quarter and then picked off a Michaelis pass to set up a five-yard scoring run by David Green to put Lafayette up 30-0 with 11:54 to play in the game.

After a Cameron punt, Brown scored on the pass from McKay with 4:44 left for the final score.

The Dragons host the Benton Cardinals in the CHS Homecoming game next Friday.
