Lady Dragons conquered by Warriors

Although Cameron’s girls soccer team fell to the Smithville Warriors at home last Wednesday, the team’s vigor provided a boost of confidence.

“Smithville has won our conference every year I have coached. This is my 4th season coaching girls soccer and the previous 3 seasons Smithville had beat us by 10 goals each season. We went into this game just not wanting that to happen again.” Head Coach Michael Van Brunt said.

The Warriors scored on Senior Keeper Shayna Calloway early in the first half. Calloway ended the day with 10 saves in goal. The Dragons’ defense was able to fend off any other attempts at the goal in the first half, and began the second half with a 0-1 score. The Warriors advanced their lead shortly after halftime with another goal, before a corner kick by Sophomore Mackenzie Davis to the feet of Senior Danyelle Sutton resulted in a Cameron goal, putting the home team back in the game. The Dragons were unable to capitalize on the momentum of the goal and, after one last Warriors point was chalked up, finished the game with a 1-3 score.

“We played with energy and for the most part we matched their intensity. If we eliminate a few errors, we are right in that game. Though it was a loss I think it is a confidence booster for our team to know that we can play with one of the best teams in our conference.” Van Brunt said.

The ladies traveled to St. Joseph Lafayette on Tuesday, April 5 and will play St. Joseph Benton at home on Wednesday, April 6.
