Lady Dragons Cross Country team makes history, advances to state

For the first time in Cameron High School history, a women’s Cross Country team has qualified for the state meet.

Last Saturday, October 29, the Cross Country teams traveled to Maryville to compete in the district qualifier. The top 15 runners would qualify for state, and the top 2 teams would send the entire team to the state match, which will be held in Jefferson City this Saturday, November 5.

For the Dragons, Jacob Barbee placed 31st with a time of 20:33.6, Alex Carmack placed 38th with a time of 21:04.4, Jacob Roberts placed 42nd with a time of 21:16.4, Jacob Roach placed 44th with a time of 21:21.1, Joshua Stevenson placed 49th with a time of 21:58.8, Zachary Rauseo placed 52nd with a time of 22:06.3, and Caleb Ramey placed 56th with a time of 22:25.2. The team’s seventh place finish brought the season to an early end.

"The guys had a bit of a rough day overall.” Head Coach Kurt Dickkut said. “The second mile was really hard for a number of us and we just couldn't quite recover from it. That's one thing I, as a coach, am going to look into finding ways to rectify next season. The guys are a young team, we have no seniors, and are pretty balanced between juniors, sophomores and even freshmen. Their youth should be a strength down the road as they should only get stronger physically as they mature."

For the Lady Dragons, Zoe Foreman secured an individual advancement by placing 9th with a time of 22:27.4, as did Nicole Jackson with her 11th place finish and time of 22:50. In other Lady Dragons results, Kenzie Terhune placed 16th with a time of 23:42.5, Khayla Hollingsworth placed 22nd with a time of 24:21.5, Kylie Graham placed 24th with a time of 24:34.4, and Lindsey Vaiciulis placed 44th with a time of 28:05.6. The team finished second overall, and, for the first time, the entirety of a women’s squad will advance to state.

"The girls ran really well.” Coach Dickkut said. “Going into the meet we had talked about what we were needing to do as a team and as individuals.  For some of the girls that meant meeting a certain time and for others it was simply to finish with a good placing but also ahead of St. Pius girls. Each one of these young women either met or exceeded what they needed to do. I have to admit I wasn't all that surprised though - as they've been doing that all season - in fact I kind of expected it."
