Late TD lifts Eagles past Dragons
Bishop LeBlond scored the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter and defeated the Cameron Dragons, 28-21, in the MEC football opener for both teams Friday in St. Joseph.
The Golden Eagles improve to 3-0 overall while the Dragons fall to 1-2.
RB Dillon Garrett scored on a five-yard run with 3:17 remaining to cap a 67-yard scoring drove for Bishop LeBlond. The Golden Eagles converted on a fourth down play and were aided by a pass interference call against the Dragons on the winning drive.
CHS turned the ball over on downs on the following possession, but forced a Bishop LeBlond punt. Golden Eagles punter Sam Schanze kicked the ball out of bounds at the Dragons one-yard line and then DB Paul Sanchez intercepted a pass with 53 seconds to go to seal the win.
Bishop LeBlond took the lead in the first quarter on a 57-yard touchdown pass from Schanze to WR Trey Hartman, who picked off a pass by CHS QB Caleb Shanks at the Golden Eagles 24-yard line to set up the scoring drive.
Later in the opening period, the Golden Eagles recovered a Dragons fumble at the Bishop LeBlond 39 and went up 14-0 on a three-yard TD run by Garrett with 4:31 left.
CHS then put together an 80-yard scoring drive with Shanks going into the end zone on an eight-yard run around the right side. Joe Bryant added the extra point kick with 1:30 remaining in the quarter.
Cameron tied the game late in the first half. Bishop LeBlond came up short on a fake punt play and the Dragons took over at their own 47 with 3:14 to go. CHS drove the ball to the six-yard line and on fourth and goal, Shanks found Tristan Michaelis open in the end zone for the score with eight-tenths of a second left. Bryant’s PAT tied the game.
Cameron took advantage of a fumbled punt return by the Golden Eagles to take the lead in the third period. RB Dalton Erickson scored on a 15-yard run with 5:47 to play and CHS went up, 21-14.
Bishop LeBlond tied the game with a 75-yard scoring drive, culminated by a 16-yard TD pass from Schanze to Hartman with 10:08 left in the fourth quarter.
Following a Dragons punt, the Golden Eagles put together the game-winning drive.
Cameron will play its first home game of the season next Friday when they entertain Chillicothe. The Hornets lost at home to Maryville, 54-9.
