Spartans rally to upend Dragons

The Richmond Spartans rallied from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter and defeated the Cameron Dragons, 46-43, in overtime at the CHS gym Friday night.

Cameron took a 34-22 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Spartans stormed back and tied the game with 11 seconds left to play. Noah Thornberry made the front end of a one-and-one to make it 38-37 Dragons. He missed his second free throw, but a foul was called on the Dragons against Thornberry after the miss and he went back to the line to shoot the double bonus. He missed the first shot, and then made the second to tie the game at 38-all.

The Dragons turned the ball over on their possession and Richmond missed a desperation shot at the buzzer to send the contest into overtime.

CHS held a 40-39 lead when Thornberry scored on a lay-up with 2:52 to go to give Richmond the lead, and then after Cameron missed a shot, Thornberry buried a deep three from the right wing to push the Spartans lead to 44-40 with 2:08 remaining.

Jaxson Frazier hit a three-pointer to pull the Dragons to within 44-43 with 1:40 left. The Spartans Makhi White then made one of two foul shots with 38 seconds to play for a 45-43 lead and went one for two from the free throw line again with 18 seconds to go to make it 46-43. The Dragons missed a three-pointer and got the rebound but could not get off another shot before the final buzzer.
