Wrestlers win three matches at Savannah

The Cameron wrestling team improved their dual match to 10-0 for the season with three victories at the Savannah Quad on Thursday.

The Dragons defeated the host Savages, 43-33, Maryville, 72-12, and Lafayette, 82-0.

 

On Saturday, CHS will host the Crossroads Dual Tournament.

Wrestling teams from five states will compete in the inaugural event, to be held at both the CHS and Veterans Middle School gymnasiums.

There will also be the induction of five individuals into the CHS Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The Dragons will host a total of nine teams for the tournament. Teams from Missouri include the Camdenton Lakers, Clinton Cardinals, Kirksville Tigers, Mexico Bulldogs, and the Savannah Savages. Also competing is the Millard South Patriots from Omaha, Nebraska, the Olathe North Eagles from Kansas, the Shenandoah Mustangs from Iowa and the Har-Ber Wildcats from Springdale, Arkansas.

Millard South is the defending Nebraska Class A state champion. Olathe North finished in second place in the Kansas Class 6A state tournament last season. Har-Ber came in third place in the Arkansas Division 6A-7A tournament in 2015.

Kirksville finished sixth and Mexico came in ninth place at the Missouri Class 2 state wrestling tournament a year ago.

Before the championship round matches begin at approximately 6:30 p.m., the induction ceremony for the inaugural Wrestling Hall of Fame class will be held. The inductees include Doug Eckermann, who was head coach of the 1978 team that tied for the Class A state title, Charles Scott, a 1978 state champion, Tom Earley, who was an undefeated state champion in 1979, Cale Griffin, all-time winningest wrestler in CHS history and a 3-time state champion and Brian McClure, who also won three state titles.

The tournament will get underway at 10 a.m. Saturday.
